(More customer reviews)I wasn't going to post any commentary on this product, except no one else has.And it's the latest version of nVidia 6200 available from Amazon. (January 30th 2010)Qualifiabley it's much better than the on-board graphics. It is however a step downwards from the PCI card I had previously installed.PNY Verto GeForce 8400GS - Graphics adapter - GF 8400 GS - PCI - 512 MB DDR2 - DVI ( HDCP )
if a low-cost AGP is really what you need, this is the same version as the model number VCG62512SAPB
PNY 6200 512 MB AGP DVI + VGA + S-Video Graphics Card VCG62512SAPB
The 8400 series supports more screen resolutions/refresh rates. But it is hampered by a PCI bus interface when it comes to displaying video through-put.There's a considerable void of knowledge I haven't yet discovered about what makes AGP8x a faster interface than PCI, or what makes a PCIex a faster interface than AGP8x or standard PCI.While I suspect standard PCI products may perform faster when doubling or tripling the old standard 400MHz fsb of AMD cpus,I can certainly attest that utilizing the AGP8x slot on my main-board instead of the PCI interface has completely eliminated some audio stutter/buffering that formerly occurred while the 570MHz gpu/graphics adapter was struggling to keep up with on-board 5.1 audio being handled by an old AMD Athlon XP.
The PNY 6200 gpu/graphics adapter runs @ 350MHz which is not all that fast. It's the same series nVidia chip that was included as on-board graphics with our newest Win7 computer. But even with my single core processor windows-XP, photo images are stunningly reproduced through an LCD monitor with native 1680 x 1050 resolution. And did I mention that I now actually have some video playing capability again?Without stuttering... (That 8400 claims to be Blu-Ray capable, though how on earth I can scarcely imagine.)I reiterate, the impediment appears to be the front-side-bus of my cpu, not the fault of the 8400.
I didn't even have to uninstall my drivers, previously downloaded from nVidia.I unplugged the PCI from one slot, plugged the AGP into the other slot, started up windows (with on-board VGA display enabled, of course) and it recognized the GeForce card immediately and installed the readily available nVidia driver automatically.Just like when I was having a good day with Win Vista!:-)
