Creative Zen Micro 5 GB MP3 Player Black Review

The Creative Zen Micro is no iPod killer. It is the iPod for the rest of us. Where Apple's product is stylish and fun to use, it has that unfortunate Apple characteristic of locking users into buying their music strictly from Apple. iTunes is a fine online music store, but there are many others and some (MSN and Musicmatch for example) are as deep in selection and easy to use. And the Creative Zen Micro gives us a player every bit as intuitive and stylish as the Apple product and the benefit of FM radio, Outlook synchronization and the use of every online music store other than iTunes.

Everyone knows that the Micro comes in an array of colors. Mine is silver. I like the blue glow and the shiny white case that compliment the silver face. Personally I think the black model looks best, but I didn't buy the unit for the color. I've seen a number of reviews of the Micro from people having trouble with the vertical touch pad. After two adjustments, I had no issues with that controller at all. It is more intuitive than running your finger in a circle. The touch pad and menus it opens are user adjustable. I was having trouble getting the Micro cursor to stop where I wanted when scrolling though the menu lists. I adjusted the touchpad sensitivity setting to low but that didn't help. I adjusted it to high and the problem was solved. It may seem counterintuitive to select high sensitivity to better control the touchpad. If you're having touchpad issues, try the high setting and see for yourself.

The Micro comes in with good quality ear buds, a hard shell case that accepts adapters to help it serve as a belt clip or a desk stand. There is also a carrying pouch, a USB 2.0 cord, universal AC adapter, and the removable, rechargeable battery. Other accessories are available from Creative. I am not a big fan of ear buds, but these are pretty good and the cord doubles as the FM radio antenna. I selected Auto Search and the Micro found strong signals for all of its 32 presets. I live in an area with lots of FM radio, so performance in other areas may vary.

Volume on the Micro is controlled by the touchpad, not a separate button. Some folks prefer a separate wheel for volume. It is more important to me that the volume reaches acceptable levels and is EQ adjustable. Both are true on the Micro. There are a number of EQ presets and a limited ability to customize adjustments.

You can create playlists on the fly which is a great feature of the Micro missing in many other MP3 players. It is also possible to create playlists on your computer using either the included Creative software or Windows Mediaplayer 10. I like the interface in WMP 10 better than the Creative software and the Micro syncs with WMP 10 flawlessly.

The Micro has a microphone for recording voice notes. Speak normally into this mic or you will get distorted sound. At normal speaking volumes, the quality was fine. You might be tempted to shout to such a tiny device, but don't.

Creative says the battery will play for 12 hours. Early buyers of the Micro are receiving an extra battery in the package, which is a great bonus. I charged the extra battery and keep it in the pouch to be handy when needed. I've not run a battery test where I drain the unit dry, but I probably won't get 12 hours anyway, because I set the backlight for bit longer than the default. I was pleased to learn that the Micro charges either from the AC adapter or via the USB cable when it is plugged in for syncing. That is a nice touch.

My unit is full with just over 1000 songs, far short of the 2500 claimed for the 5GB drive. This is my fault. The 2500 claim is based on using only WMA format songs recorded at 64kbps. I have a mix of WMA and MP3 files and I usually encode at a much higher rate. This is another reason the Zen Micro is the player for me. The original iPod and other devices are just too big. I don't have anywhere near 10,000 songs to carry around. I am pleased for those folks who do, but drives that big would be a waste of space for me. The 5GB units provide just enough room for me to carry around my digital collection. As the number of songs I own grows, I can always compress them to fit better on the Micro or become more selective about which tunes get synched.

Creative has a winner in the Zen Micro. I really believe this is the music player for the rest of us and, with some marketing behind it, it can do for the other online music stores what the iPod did for its brother iTunes. Thank goodness for choice.

Product Description:
The Zen Micro digital music player from Creative Labs packs an incredible 5 GB of storage capacity into a shell small enough to sit comfortably in your jeans pocket. It also rides nicely in your hand, with a palm-fitting profile and thumb-friendly front-panel controls. It's a bit shorter than an Apple iPod Mini, yet its rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides 12 hours of continuous playback--50 percent more than iPod Mini's. The Zen Micro is compatible not merely with MP3s and WAV files, but with WMA as well. Toss in USB 2.0 connectivity and you're looking at one spiffy portable music player.

But playing isn't all the Zen Micro does. You can use it to receive FM radio (with 32 station presets to keep your favorites at the ready), and to record, either from the radio or from live sources such as voice dictation or lectures using the Zen Micro's built-in condenser microphone.
Trimmed in a luminescent blue glow and with easily visible backlit buttons, this stylish black player holds up to 1,250 songs (83 hours) at 128 kbps or 2,500 songs (166 hours) at lower-fidelity 64 kbps (MP3/WMA)--that's a solid week's worth of music listening, never playing the same song twice. Compatibility with Microsoft's WMA compressed-audio format grants access to over 2 million downloadable songs offered promotionally or for sale online.
Perhaps the Zen Micro's coolest attribute is its DJ feature, which will shuffle not only all the songs you've loaded or all the songs in a given album, but also, at your discretion, only the tracks you listen to most, or only those you rarely hear, taking the work out of selecting your favorites or hunting out all the music you're still getting to know.

Zen Micro's rechargeable battery is easy to replace.
For navigation, the device features a vertical, linear touchpad designed to make searching through songs or playlists easy, quick, and fun. The unit's blue, 160 x 104-pixel, electroluminescent LCD shows key functions and song details at a glance, and you can even customize the main menu to keep right at your fingertips the features that matter most to you.
Another of the Zen Micro's handy features is its personal organizer. You'll never forget an important anniversary with the onboard calendar, and it also includes a to-do list and a contacts list, all of which sync seamlessly with Microsoft Outlook (Outlook thus required for use of these features). In addition, the device offers a sleep timer and alarm so you can drift off to sleep to the strains of one playlist and wake to a completely different one.
The Zen Micro's removable battery is easy to swap with another fully charged battery (additional batteries sold separately), extending your listening by a half-day per swap.
What's in the Box
The Zen Micro player, stereo earbud headphones, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, a USB 2.0 cable, an installation CD, a quick-start guide, and Creative MediaSource software.

HP OfficeJet 6210 All-in-One Printer Review

HP OfficeJet 6210 All-in-One Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We are a long-established, technology-based counsulting and services company. We have thirty computers and nine HP printers on the LAN. We bought two 6210s for use at work stations for light to medium use (5 - 30 pages per day).

We could not be more pleased with the quality of the printed pages and the operation, but avoid heavy use because of excessive ink cost per page. (This is the reason why the printer cost seems absurdly low.)

Scanner, printer, and fax all worked great. The unit is very, very compact and handsomely styled - a far cry from the earlier all-in-ones that these replaced. The paper feed tray could perhaps be improved. A small amount of care must be used to prevent stuffing the paper in too far.

Print cartidges have very little capacity. The color cartridge has a list price of $32.00 and yields 260 "standard" pages. That's 12 cents per page. For the same standard page our older HP R60 all-in-one delivers 690 pages for a list price of $40.00 or $0.06 per page. I have not investigated black printing costs; but the black cartridge is also small. Googling "cost per page" and printer model will get you the cost info from a third party.

Canon PIXMA iP6600D Photo Printer Review

Canon PIXMA iP6600D Photo Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just bought this printer tonight as a replacement for my Canon I950 which died on me recently. I am resigned to the fact that every couple of years you have to upgrade your printer either due to failure or new introduced features. I had compared this printer with the HP8250 and feel quite comfortable with my choice of the Canon.

Setup: Flawlessly, exactly as described in quick setup guide. The LEDs on the print cartridges are cool although of course you cannot see them unless the cover is open. Here's hoping it will be a long time before they start blinking!

Photo Printing: I have printed a variety of photos using 4x6 paper. The quality is very good but still not up to the level of a print from photo processing at Costco. The sharpness is pretty good but the richness and saturation, "fullness" if I may call it still isn't quite there. From various reviews I have read, it really seems you need more then six color printers to really rival processed prints. Having said that, I'm convinced that anybody in the office hallway that you hand a 6600D print to is going to say it's very good. It is noticeably better then the HP8250 that I had done comparison tests. I printed pics using both the Canon photo plus and photo pro paper. It is very hard to tell the difference between the two but yes the Pro is just a tad sharper and also when you rub your finger across it a bit more smooth then the plus. Still does not approach the smoothness of a processed print. That is another reason why I still prefer processed prints. You can rub your finger across them and you don't get that tacky, sticky feeling you get from doing the same with a ink jet photo. Overall I would not say the photo quality is not that much enhanced over the I950. I am really hoping the inks prove themselves in longevity though.

Text printing: Here I was pleasantly surprised. I cannot find a good example from my I950 but is the text blacker? It still isn't a match for my $150 laser but I think would suffice fine for a person that mainly wants a photo printer but wants to occasionally print text.

Printing speed: Overall very fast. My I950 blew away any previous inkjet I had owned and this is a notch faster still.

Other things: I see there is still a quirk with the Canon driver also present on the I950. That is when selecting a photo paper and choosing custom setting rather then high, the slider notch between fast and fine is not all the way towards fine. I wonder if selection high, the notch is set the furthest towards high or is it a setting below like in custom. I have not tried the bottom loading cassette yet. If it works fine then that will be a nice option as I can load it with photo paper. I played with the LCD and direct photo printing at the store but haven't yet at home. It seems to work ok and is bigger then a lot at 3.5"

All and all I would highly recommend this printer except to say if you wanted absolutely top notch photo printing, you'll still have to move up the ladder. My how far things have progressed since buying my $500 HP560 back in 1993.

Cowon D2 - 16 GB Portable Multimedia Player (Black) Review

Cowon D2 - 16 GB Portable Multimedia Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(Initial Disclaimer:I am a big fan of most Cowon products.)

The D2 is a great A/V player, but I honestly have to say that I can't recommend it to everyone. If you want a flawless GUI, up-to-the-minute firmware, extensive playlist capabilities, compatibility with AAC files, bluetooth connectivity, superior FM radio performance, high-quality stock earphones, and name-recognition, then it is probably not for you. These are all D2 weaknesses.

Fortunately, most of these don't mean much to me.I don't really even care that much for the video capabilities (though they are pretty good for the size of the unit.)I want true drag-and-drop capability for media files, multiple playback formats (including FLAC and OGG,) superior battery life (EVERYONE admits that Cowon owns this one,) high power output at the phones jack, and superior (not necessarily audiophile) sound quality. The D2 has all of this.

I traded up to the 16GB D2 from a 8GB i7 and I must admit that I miss a couple things about the i7.For one thing, the touchscreen is annoying.(Don't misunderstand me...the touchscreen on the D2 works fine. It's just that ALL touchscreens are annoying to me.Would you prefer to use a mouse on your desktop, or to reach up and use a touchscreen monitor?A touchscreen is wasteful of motion, often difficult to use when your finger blocks your view of the screen, and ends up providing you with a nice fingerprint-filled display.Fortunately, the D2 display shows prints only at certain angles and is very easy to clean.)I also like the size and shape of the i7, which, being built like a little brick, has no wide surfaces to stress and no large display to protect. The D2, on the other hand, has a lovely (fairly-large) display and several firmware features missing from the i7.Both models are available in 16GB versions, with the i7 being slightly less expensive than the D2.

The sound quality of the D2 is very comparable to that of the i7, though I would probably give the D2 a slight edge in transparency. The output is more than enough to drive most earbuds, earphones, and low-impedance headphones, but you will definitely need a high-quality headphone amp if you use less-efficient headphones with this unit.My Sony MDRSA3000s and Ultrasone HFI-700DVDs definitely need the help, but my Grados and Ultimate Ears IEMs sound fantastic without the amp.

Frankly, I was looking at both the the D2 and the 16 GB Sony NWZ-A729BLK.The Sony is probably at least as good as the D2 in terms of sound quality and slightly better in its GUI, but the Sony is $60 more than the D2, doesn't have the EQ features of the D2, and won't play FLAC or OGG audio files.(Most of my audio files are encoded with OGG as I find that OGG files usually sound just as good as MP3 files, but with a 20% reduction in size.)

I haven't yet had a chance to check the battery life of the D2, but if it is anything like the battery life of the i7, it will be nothing less than astounding. My i7 will run for more than 35 hours, playing audio continuously.

One last comment...see the cute little pick-shaped stylus that comes with the unit?Do yourself a favor and just leave it in the package.Unlike most PDAs, the stylus does not fit into any sort of slot or recess in the D2.You're supposed to hang it by its little cord around the carrying strap (or somewhere.)Very irritating. It also functions as a little rest that allows you to lean the D2 at two different viewing angles on a desktop or table. The D2 is very unstable when you do this.If I were you, I'd just forget about the using the stylus altogether and use the back of my nail to select items on the screen.

So, there you go.I won't tell you that the D2 is the best thing since canned beer, but it does the things that I want extremely well.If I hadn't wanted to upgrade from 8GB to 16GB, I probably would have stuck with my i7, but the D2 made a lot of sense when I started looking at the avilable flash players.

UPDATE 3/2/2009:A couple more comments after more months of experience.I've seen several comments about database corruption here and I've got to say that I'm puzzled. The D2 builds a database when you turn it on (which causes a delay that some might consider annoying) but I've NEVER had to fool around doing some of the things other reviewers have described (reformatting SD cards, deleting files from the system folder, etc.)It reads MP3 tags just fine and without a hitch.I've used many tools to edit my MP3 tags (including my favorite, MediaMonkey) and they've all worked great.

You definitely want to remember not to change the SD card unless you turn the unit off.It won't hurt anything (I don't think) but the D2 needs to scan the new card to determine what media files are on it and it does this when you turn it on.Just don't plan on popping 1GB SD cards in and out to find your favorite songs.I keep things pretty simple...I keep audio files on the D2 internal memory and then use the SD cards for movies.I find that I can keep 15-20 movies on a single 8GB card.(I'm currently using Gordian Knot to convert the videos and it works fine.)

Battery life continues to be phenomenal.I have only dropped to a single battery segment on the indicator once or twice.

I use a rubber (silicone?) skin and a screen protector, rather than an actual case.Works great and I have zero scratches on the screen or unit.Unlike some other players, the D2 will use basically any mini-USB cable or charger to connect.I normally charge it on trips using my Motorola Razr charger.

I've done two firmware upgrades since I bought the D2 and neither one erased my media files from the unit.I'm not suggesting you take a chance, but my files survived just fine.

You can get an adapter which allows you feed the composite video and analog audio to a TV and/or stereo system. You would be shocked by the picture and sound quality you can get doing this.A lot of my movies are converted to 480p image, which is more than adequate for a standard (non-HDTV) TV set. This is really cool when you're on vacation.

While my fingertips work fine on the UI, flipping your finger over and using a fingernail is more practical.I also use a standard pen (not the writing tip) even if it's made of metal. The screen protector keeps you from scratching the screen at any normal pressure. The little stylus they give you continues to be virtually worthless, though I'll admit that there have been times I would have liked to have used it as a stand for the D2 while I was on a plane.Holding it in your hand can cause a bit of a cramp.

My SDHC cards work fine in the D2, though I've only tried 8GB and smaller cards.I don't see any difference in the speed with which the D2 accesses the files, regardless of what type or size SD media I use.

The biggest gripe remains the lack of a playlist feature.I just don't understand why Cowon is so hardheaded about this. You don't have true playlists on newer Cowon units, either.

First Alert Instant Alarm 4pk Review

First Alert Instant Alarm 4pk
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are two MAIN purposes for home security systems:
1. Protecting your valuables from theft.

2. Protecting YOU from an unexpected surprise, someone coming in while you are at home.

Both goals are important but these sensors will up the chances that YOU are protected.

We have a great alarm system but there are times when we are at home and just want to make sure ONLY the most vulnerable areas (doors, windows) are alarmed. Our system doesn't allow for a "window and door alarm only" option. That leaves us with the option of having the entire house alarmed, top and bottom, or leaving the alarm off. Not an optimal choice to us, especially during the day. When we are at home, we don't need EVERY room to be on "alert" status. Just some areas.

Secondly, although not many people know this,MANY sliding glass doors are installed inproperly (up to 35%), allowing a thief to simply take them off their tracks from the outside and come in, bypassing many typical alarm sensors (check yours, you may in for an unpleasant surprise). Some alarm systems work around this. Not all do. These inexpensive sensors may help.

And even if your sliding glass doors ARE properly installed, think of the average thief's way of doing things; get in quickly, get out quickly, ignore any alarms that DO go off and get away before the police arrive. So your odds of stopping theft may be relatively small. So focus on what you CAN control - your personal safety.

That means you want to KNOW when doors and windows are opened, especially if you are in the home. You want enough warning to call "911" and slip out a side door or to make noise or whatever.

Finally, for those people who can't afford an expensive alarm system, these sensors may make your home or apartment significantly more secure and you won't have to pay annual or monthly fees

At this price, you can stock up and simply replace them as needed. A large, noisy dog wouldn't hurt either but if you don't want the responsibility of a dog, the sensors alone are a good investment - and a cheap one.

Now, here's the AMAZING part: I got these as an extra measure of security and within a week of doing so, we had a break -in attempt...in broad daylight...in a neighborhood which is considered one of the city's safest. Turned out to be a roving band of thieves, hitting one town and moving to another. It may have been a fluke, a rarity but I was home, the alarm went off, they ran away and the police got some very clear footprints as they had made a mistake and stepped in slightly wet dirt, leaving clear impressions.

Apparently people's shoes can have individual characteristics, depending on where the wear is most prominent and how a person's foot fits in that shoe. Didn't know that till then. The footprints helped to nail the perpetrators.

The sensors may have saved my life - or, at the least, prevented theft of some of our valuables. In any case, it spared us from some potential nastiness.

These sensors also allow us to be home and make sure that NO ONE can come in without us being aware of it. They have three settings: alarm (loud, noisy), chime (in case you want to know if your kids are coming in and out) and an odd little nature type of sound (not sure why). You can, of course, turn them off completely when going in and outdoors.

They'd be great for parents of toddlers, alerting them to possible attempts of escape. I wouldn't rely on them to "babysit" my kids but they'd be an asset. It'd be harder for a kid to slip out without you knowing about it, especially since the alarm is LOUD and too high for little hands to reach.

If you are a parent or grandparent, these alarms are a great way to know if a baby or child has opened a cabinet containing dangerous items. The alarms can be turned off when the baby or child isn't in the house. Even if you THINK you've babyproofed your house, these little alarms are great backups, being loud enough to wake up a sleeping adult. Not all "babyproof" cabinet and door locks work as well as advertised so these alarms up the security level.

They also are a great way to let you know if a child has gotten out of bed in the middle of the night and gone out the bedroom door (put them up high enough on the door so that only an adult can reach them).

A few more tips:
1. DO NOT COUNT on any one alarm system. Secure your home in layers, like an onion. That means you put the prickly rosebushes under a ground floor window and a LARGE table inside the window, a table covered with items that would make noise if moved around. Don't make it easy to just pop open a window or door and walk in.

2. Dogs. Alarm companies may not want you to know this but a large, barking dog can be EQUAL to an alarm system. Think of it: if YOU were a burglar, which would scare you more, the possibility of getting bit or the noise of an alarm? An alarm can be worked around but a dog is unpredictable and may get to you before you can get to it.

3. Inexpensive aids to prop up your traditional alarm system. Locking the door to the garage to make access from the garage to the house more difficult. Lights around the perimeter of your home.

Unlike other reviewers, I have NEVER had a single one of these come off. You do need to make sure the surface is clean and you do have to make sure the sensors are lined up correctly, so that if a door is opened, the alarm goes off. DO NOT peel off the adhesive till you are ready to put the sensor in place. Do not unpeel them and try to put them back on. Know what you are doing and get them in place properly and you'll be good to go.

GE 28101EE1 Dect 6.0 Accessory Handset Cell Fusion Seriesb Phones (Silver) Review

GE 28101EE1 Dect 6.0 Accessory Handset Cell Fusion Seriesb Phones

I've been through a 8-week warranty return on the 28128EE2 Cell Fusion base unit and two 28101EE1 accessory handsets, and no joy. The first set purchased through Amazon didn't allow the extra handsets to register; I got an OUT OF RANGE message no matter what I tried. Tech support for RCA-Thompson urged me to send the defective units in for replacement, and when the new ones came in the problem was still the same. By now, I had exceeded the 30-day windows for product returns with the store I had bought them from, and I don't have any confidence that RCA will ever get this straightened out. I will be junking these and getting an XLINK Cellular Gateway instead, and never will buy another Thompson product again.

HP HDX16-1370US 16-Inch Entertainment Laptop Review

HP HDX16-1370US 16 inch Entertainment Laptop

I'm a big fan of the HP HDX series. It sits at the top of their Pavilion line and is one of the best built notebooks sold in the retail channel. It's aimed solidly at consumers looking for a high end entertainment laptop.Because the material quality is well above average it's not necessarily the best value: you can get these specs for less money, just not with the same build quality. This is a good choice for someone looking for a notebook that can handle more than just web browsing. The biggest drawback of this HDX model is a slightly under powered battery and a little more weight (though again, much of that lies with the superior frame and shell).

Let's go over the specs:

CPU: The Core 2 P7550 runs two separate cores at 2.26GHz and has 3MB of on chip cache. The Core2 line is the best notebook CPU out there today and and this model this is about in the middle of the mobile Core2 line in terms of performance. At 35W it sits in the same thermal envelope as much slower chips (such as the Mobile Pentium line).Having two cores means you can run your full internet security suite and not have your computer freeze up for events like a virus scan.

MEMORY: 4GB of DDR2 RAM is plenty and the 1066Mhz memory speed is plenty fast.

HDD: The 500GB HDD has plenty of storage, even if you like to do video encoding. The 5400RPM speed isn't the fastest but it is more reliable that 7200RPM drives.
